Mark: When we work with families who are struggling with someone who is addicted, I find myself explaining a great deal about addiction and how difficult it can be to define addiction. Opinions and experiences can vary from person to person and setting to setting. I describe the problem in these terms: if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If someone has a substance abuse problem that has not come up on the radar, does that mean he or she does not have a problem? This is what motivated us to write this book.

Janet: We undertook this project together because in both our private practice and our other work we have continually studied and recognized the impact of substance use on family members and friends of the user. We have witnessed the joy of individuals who reach out and accept the help of their loved ones as well as the difficult experience this can be for all parties involved. We have, unfortunately, seen individuals continue to use even when all of the pieces for their success have fallen into place.
